You are going to find that when you hire me, I will be sending you a lot of paperwork. So start a file to keep all of these legal documents in one place!

There are a lot of letters in the beginning, it slows down in the middle and then really heats up again as your case approaches trial. From day one I send a confirmation letter for your case. You need to know that I am out there fighting for you. In that letter I will send a fee agreement (whether it is a speeding ticket, a Misdemeanor DWI or a Serious Felony). This instruction sheet that will explain the process that you are facing and include a thank you letter. Each of these letters are going to include important paperwork.

I send letters when we go to court, good Criminal Defense Attorneys go to court every day, and we cannot expect you to read our minds about what happened. In our letters, we say what happened, what will happen next, what we need you to do and what you can expect me to do. This is your life. We are taking it seriously!

Why do we do all of this? First, we know that you want to know what to expect. If you know the information that is contained in these letters, your anxiety will go way down. Good, bad or indifferent, you will at least know what to expect.

Could I email and/or call? Yes, we can and do. But we love documentation. Because sometimes clients call and say “what happened?” Every letter that gets sent out we save to PDF. That means when that client is on the phone, we can just say, “Check your email for the letter date December 1, 2015”. You will know we are working hard for you!

Every letter, memo, and legal brief is going to be copied and forwarded to you. Your file is going to look like my file. If there is something legal, I try to break it down in a way that everyone understands. Believe me, I know that I speak a different language. You will hear me say a lot: “I am going to tell you what the law is, then I am going to tell you what that means in my experience.”

Not a single thing important will be done in connection with your case without you knowing about it. I know that being surprised is the last thing you want when it comes to your case. Sometimes things will be communicated over the phone and then confirmed by letter. This is to make sure that we are on the same page and we have documentation of it!

So, just make a file. Every time you get a letter or document from me, throw it in the folder. If you have a question or concern, just look in that folder and you will have the answer. We do this for you so it will put you at ease. We want to help make this process as painless as possible. That should be the goal of the very best criminal defense lawyers.
