Matthew Russell, a southwest Missouri native, attended Missouri State University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government before attending Creighton University School of Law, in Omaha, Neb., where he won several awards for trial advocacy.
After graduating law school, Matthew returned to Springfield where he began working at the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office. Matthew worked in the major crimes division while there, trying many felony cases and honing his trial skills.
Because of this experience, Matthew has an enhanced understanding of both criminal law and family law. In his nine years there, Matthew prosecuted every kind of crime under Missouri law and argued hundreds of trials and hearings. This gives him an inside understanding of the prosecutorial process and how to get the best possible result for your case — he understands what prosecutors and police look for and how to combat their case.
After nearly a decade there, Matthew decided to further assist those in the Southwest Missouri and started MRD Lawyers, where he primarily practices family law, criminal law and estate planning. He is committed to ensuring the legal system works for those he represents, and his commitment to families was a key driver in his decision to start his own legal practice.
Matthew is also involved with many Springfield-area organizations, including Leadership Springfield Board of Directors, for which he currently serves as director. Leadership Springfield is an organization that focuses on indentifying community leaders and familiarizing them with community opportunities, needs, problems and resources.
Continually showing his commitment to the practice of law and ensuring the legal system is working, Matthew has served on the CASP Board in Springfield. This group allows those who are charged with minor crimes to pay for their offense through community service rather than by serving jail time. His dedication to families led him to serve with the Violence Free Families of Springfield, where he helped families in need understand their legal rights.
“I have a unique perspective on how the legal system works, and I use this every day to do what is best for my clients, their families and their future. I try to help them find a solution everyone can live with, but if that option is not available, I will put my courtroom experience to work.” — Matthew Russell
